When planning to build a new master control environment and central equipment room New York 1 News sought the expertise of ASI. The concept was not only to create a new master control facility but to also improve the workflow environment.

The project involved the design and integration of a new Master Control Room and supporting equipment room in their existing facility located at 75 Ninth Avenue, New York, N.Y. The MCR Consolidation project included the integration of a new routing switcher system, three new Master Switchers, new server and automation systems, new monitoring and support equipment and infrastructure required to provide seven program distribution streams.

The new master control allows NY 1 News to the multiple distribution streams from a single Master Control area using three Master Switcher systems.  All feeds are distributed in both HD and analog.  All internal routing and distribution is via HD-SDI with embedded audio channels.

The Project
Programming for each feed is switched with an Evertz QMC-2 Master Switcher.  The Master Switchers each control an Evertz Topaz 16 x 16 routing switcher, which provides sub-switching for the program, preset, bypass and key feeds to the Master Switcher.  Sources feeding the Topaz switchers include Omneon server ports providing inputs and outputs to and from a central Omneon storage system.  Additionally there is;  an Omneon Media Deck providing backup capability, central routing switcher outputs and additional sources.  A Dalet Automation System provides automated control of the server systems and switching.

Control panels and terminals for the switchers, server systems and automation system is incorporated into a new “L” shaped custom console.  The console has three primary operator positions each capable of switching and monitoring signals.  Feeds will be distributed to an Evertz multiviewer system, which provides pre-programmed multiplexed monitoring layouts to each of four LCD displays.
